The College Admissions Scandal, Explained

A few weeks ago, news broke about the most recent college admissions scandal, where more than 50 people were charged in a scheme that fought to secure their children seats at Yale, Stanford, USC, and other elite colleges. There were many high-profile families involved in this scheme, including actress Lori Laughlin and her husband Mossimo Giannilli,

The indictments come through cheating on SAT and ACT standardized tests, as well as securing athletic scholarships for students who are not athletes based on photoshopped pictures of the students. The scheme was done through William Singer, and his college counseling business that was hiding the efforts to bribe coaches, test monitors and proctors, and fabricate student histories and biographies. The money was put through as a "donation" to Singer's company, and slid through the back door of the universities.

This scheme has highlighted the extreme broken system that we have within our American Universities. It shows how the rich and powerful people of America benefit not only from, white privilege, the system of public education, and tax policies - the rich people keep getting rich. They continue to exploit the system to benefit themselves and their families, and to push those down who are already down. This scheme has only sustained the system that allows to only benefit the super rich and wealthy.
