Building a professional portfolio during undergraduate university studies is not only a great way to showcase your work for a potential employer, but to also look back at it as a self-reflection, and create an interactive resume of your work and progress. A portfolio can be used for any major but is specifically helpful for interdisciplinary students who are entering the workforce, to give insight to an employer of the resources and disciplines you have covered over the course of your studies.
“Preparing a portfolio can help you identify specific interdisciplinary competencies in a form that can be customized for specific career opportunities” (Repko, 59).
Interdisciplinary studies is not yet a widely known choice of major in the workforce. Creating a portfolio can explain what you know and how you can apply those disciplines to a real world career. For example, building a domain allows you to publish your works and findings so that other people can learn from you. Creating professional social media accounts allows you to make connections with people in your field and learn from them as well.
As an interdisciplinary student you learn a lot throughout your college career. You learn from multiple disciplines applying them to your objected career and building a portfolio will allow you to look back at all of your progress and accomplishments.
“The flexibility of the portfolio enables you to illustrate achievements over a period of time, indicating where and when improvements have occurred and reflecting on how these improvements were accomplished” (59).
