Making a Difference Around the World

Why is Interdisciplinary Studies important?

"Most people in higher education no longer see interdisciplinary studies as merely one approach among many. It is the latest big new thing... We desire to have our lives count for something, to do something meaningful, to make a contribution to society "(Repko, 3).

The up and coming phenomenon of interdisciplinary studies is allowing people to make a difference. By integrating multiple disciplines into a single field of study, people are making new discoveries and developing new things.

There are many ways to make a difference in the world and my focus is wanting to make a difference. In order to make a difference in the world you need to be able to make positive connections and gather important information and opinions from multiple sources. We go to university to build up our connections and receive a positive outcome of something meaningful. We then use all of the things we have learned throughout our multiple disciplines to then pass it on to our children, students, colleges and peers.

I want to teach all over the world and make a difference for students who really thrive to learn. Interdisciplinary studies will allow me to do just that, and really give me the motivation to be successful.

The photo above was taken by me on a service trip to Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica. We donated 200 English children's books to a rural bilingual school. This is where my thoughts on a future career really took off.
