Research Article and Applied Project Prospectus

Research Article Prospectus:

I am working on the topic of Sustainable Development Goal 4 because I want to find out how to adequately give students quality education in order to understand better sustaining their own culture and society at the same time. In giving students around the world quality education, it is important to note that quality education does not mean "westernized" education. It means that we must educate to the needs of each society and culture in order for it to sustain itself through the cycle of education. The discussion of western influence can be explored not only in education, but also in health, tourism, volunteer programs, and other areas of development. I hope to reach other educators and organizations who work in developing countries to educate the people there.

Here are some key terms I can use for my research: sustainable development

local knowledge

traditional knowledge

quality education

United Nations education development

anthropology of education

Library resources:

JSTOR

Opposing Viewpoints in Context

Game Plan:

March 8: Most research gathered

March 20: Outline done

April 10: Rough Draft

Set time aside Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am-2pm to work on research article

Applied Project Prospectus:

For my applied project I plan to do a podcast series about traveling, titled "Around the World in 30 Minutes". Using my own experiences I would share different aspects of traveling and what worked and didn't work. I will try to do 1-2 podcasts per week, and they would each have a theme or topic. I want to do this because it will both document my experiences and help others who want to have similar experiences. The interdisciplinarity of this project includes budgeting, travel, tourism, intercultural communication, second language learning, and so much more.

Here is a list of potential podcast episodes that I have come up with:

Introduction: about me, this project, and my life through IDS and my travels

Keeping an open mind: Being an American Abroad

Wanderlust Scaries and Excitement: How to Start Planning your Trip

How to Find Cheap Flights

Where to Stay While Traveling

Homestay Experience and Staying with Locals

How to Eat and Stay Healthy Abroad

Telling your Parents you're Going Abroad

Traveling with Limited Technology

Finding the Foreign in Domestic Travel

Solo Travel as a Young Woman

Backpacking Through Europe

Studying Abroad in College

Being an Au Pair/Nanny Abroad

Volunteer Abroad: Pros and Cons

Of course it may not be possible to complete all of these episodes in one semester, but as I stated before I hope to complete 1-2 per week and upload them to my website. I will be using SoundCloud to upload and embed the podcast into the podcast section of my website. In order for this project to be successful, I need to be able to record, edit, upload, and market the podcasts each week. I think that this can be a project that continues after I graduate, so I am not giving myself a deadline or an amount of episodes that I need to complete. I am also going to invite different friends and family to be on the episodes with me.

Here is a tentative record, edit, and upload schedule for me to try to follow:

Tuesdays: write ideas for each topic and record (1-2 episodes depending on topic and length)

Thursdays: Edit podcast and listen one last time

Saturday: Upload episode

Monday: Upload additional episode if applicable
